It managed to be simultaneously low on style and low on substance. In retrospect, I stick to my statement that "Kizumonogatari Part 1" was a failure. That we get to see her panties goes without saying. Nothing deep, mind, but enough to keep the story engaging. She gets some touching scenes with Araragi here. (Again, "Part 1" had little to offer in that respect.) Particular emphasis is placed on Hanekawa, who may or may not be your 'best girl' but is definitely the most thoroughly developed character in "Monogatari". The information they relay actually goes beyond what we knew thus far. The character moments also rise to the level of basic competence. The result is not half bad, even though backgrounds still aren't going to win any awards. But these simpler characters allow for more agile movement in fight scenes, which is where the focus of "Part 2" lies. "Part 1" was stuffed with talk - your standard "Monogatari" banter, looking stale and flat without the usual luxurious animation. The animation that dragged down "Part 1" feels less out of place now, because it fits the kind of narrative we are dealing with. Due to the constant variation, neither part outstays its welcome. The fights are nicely varied and ramp in dramatic heft, as do the character moments in between. This makes for an A-B-A-B-A-B structure, which can be (and indeed has been) effectively paced. He deals with them one at a time and has a moment of respite before each fight. The plot is straightforward: Araragi has to fight three vampire hunters that are after his life. What didn't work in the first film works here, thankfully reinforcing the notion that the creators have a clue what they are doing. Following the bad-looking waste of time that was "Kizumonogatari Part 1", "Kizu"'s second instalment sees the trilogy getting on the rails.
